Brushing 100 times and other myths

We’ve often heard that:

  • 100 brush strokes at night before you go to sleep will make your hair shiny and wavy
  • getting your hair cut often will make it grow faster
  • when you pluck out a gray hair, two othes will grow in its place

All of these are untrue, but only the first one is a harmful myth. Brush only to style your hair, because too much brushing will pull the hair strands out of their follicles and lead to weakened hair.

On the other hand, cutting your hair often has the benefit of getting rid of split ends, although hair grows at the rate of about half an inch per month, whether you cut it or not. And while plucking out gray hair won’t cause more gray hairs to sprout, it’s harmful to pull out hair so it is worthwhile to get rid of the habit of pulling out your hairs, whether they are gray or not.
